Blue, Bright, and Beautiful

Blue, Bright, and Beautiful

I thought Colette was going to be a boy. I am the only girl out of five, and Germ has one sister out of four. So I thought the odds of me having a son was likely, right? To be honest, I really really wanted a boy. I’m use to being surrounded by boys — and for my first child, I thought it would be easier to start that way. So anything that would affirm my want, I held on to it. And my biggest affirmation (so I thought) was a dream that my friend had of me.

My husband and I love dreams. We are both dreamers. We think it’s one of the coolest ways that God can speak to us (Genesis 40:8 & Acts 2:17). It’s crazy — some of the things that we are doing now, God showed us in dreams.

Before I knew I was pregnant, my friend had a dream of me. In that dream, I was touching my belly and she said I was radiating. I was standing in front of a colored background — it was the most beautiful blue she has ever seen. She described to me the “blue” was like the color of the sky. Once I told her I was pregnant, she told me this dream. And after I heard it, I was very excited because I thought it affirmed my want of having a boy.

So you can imagine, when I found out I was having a girl, I was super shocked. It took me a couple of weeks to fully digest the outcome, lol.

My friend’s dream became a distant memory until a visit to my parent’s home. As I was looking for food in their kitchen, my mom pointed at my belly and called Colette “Kiev,” which means blue in Khmer. I instantly stopped her and asked, “why did you just call my baby, blue?” She responded, “that’s my nickname for her (she proceeds to say the rest of the name) — Blue, Bright and Beautiful.” It was the first time I have ever heard of the phrase, so obviously I asked her what it means. And she said, “oh, it just means another level of beauty. It’s the most beautiful blue you could ever see, it’s like the color blue in the sky.”

My mom’s nickname for Colette became my inspiration for her 1st blog post. “Blue, Bright and Beautiful” became three prayer points that I pray over Colette.

Blue

“Kiev” is a the name of my grandfather, that’s why my mom loves the nickname as well. So this brings me to my first prayer point — Colette, you’re going to be close to your family.

I knew you were going to be a big sister, it just happened faster than I expected, lol. But that’s ok, I hope this means you are going to be very close to your brother. I pray that both of you will grow up looking after each other.

I also pray that you will have a great relationship with your grandparents, and that you will respect them. And not just because they’re your grandparents, but because you are going to know their stories. You are going to know their story of survival, lost, culture, sacrifice, faith, resilience, and love.

Bright

You will have no choice but to be set apart. People will look at you and know that you are different. I pray that you are not one to follow a crowd, and you will own it — embracing everything that makes you unique.

Beautiful

It’s obviously that you are stinking adorable, lol. But I pray you will be more than just surface. You’ll be kind, humble, discerning, smart and God fearing. A beauty that is worthy to be praised.

Colette, you are more than we can ever dream of. And we are excited to be by your side as you become the person that God created you to be.

Love,

-mal and germ
